Located in central Nepal’s terai, Chitwan National Park is the country’s oldest reserve, and arguably the best place to see the huge variety of wonderful lowland wildlife that Nepal has to offer. The park contains diverse ecosystems including think jungle, tall grassland, and the Reu and Naravani Rivers. This diversity makes it extremely rich in flora and fauna and as a result, home to the largest population of Bengal Tigers of any of Nepal’s parks.

Highlights
Chitwan has over 450 species of bird and 50 species of mammals within its boundaries, including some of the planet’s most-loved animals. The most famous inhabitant is the tiger, and Chitwan is now estimated to be home to around 125 individuals and this figure is rising. Another star of the park is the one-horned Rhino, a magnificent creature whose thick skin and vast size make it joy to spot despite its temperamental reputatuion. Chitwan has strict punishments in place to stop numbers of these majestic creatures falling and the hard work is paying off! Other mammals to look out for are leopards, sloth bear, antelope and otters.
Exploring Chitwan
There are many activities on offer, and a variety of great ways to explore the park. Elephant rides are an extremely popular way of exploring the rich jungle, with rides usually setting off twice a day. Jeep safaris offer the chance to go deeper into the forest than you could on foot, but jungle walks are a fantastic way to get closer to nature at a slower pace, giving you a chance to spot the more timid creatures. For a true adventure, go canoeing along the Rapti River, giving you a chance to see Gharial Crocodiles, marsh muggers, various fish and even dolphins if you’re lucky!
Things to do
There are several interesting centres in the park, giving you information and an insight into the wildlife species, and the parks history. The “Elephant Breeding Centre at Khorshor”, Sauraha gives you information on domesticated elephants and baby elephants born at the site, and the display at the “Visitor Centre at Sauraha” provides fascinating information on wildlife and conservation programs which are so vital for the park.
